Eurofarma Guatemala inaugurates an organic garden that promotes recycling, healthy eating, and environmental commitment
Already implemented in three Latin American countries, the project encourages employees to exchange recyclable materials for sustainably grown vegetables
Guatemala City, August 2026 – Eurofarma, the Brazilian multinational pharmaceutical company operating in 24 countries, recently inaugurated its Organic Garden at its Guatemala operation, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in environmental practices one of the core principles of the company's Vision 2027, which outlines its strategic objectives across five key dimensions, including ESG, to meet the challenges of maintaining best-in-class market practices.
The project, which has been highly successful in Brazil and is also implemented in Colombia, combines sustainability, environmental education, and health. Its main objective is to encourage employees to adopt healthier eating habits while fostering the circular economy by promoting the value of recyclable materials. Every week, employees can exchange recyclable items—such as PET bottles, packaging, and aluminum cans, among others—for vegetables grown in the organic garden, including lettuce, onions, beets, radishes, cilantro, parsley, basil, cauliflower, broccoli, Swiss chard, and other varieties.
Eurofarma Guatemala established the Organic Garden in a 1,064 m² area, where vegetables are grown sustainably without the use of pesticides. The entire cultivation process is supervised by gardeners and agronomists, ensuring the production of clean and safe food without agrochemicals, chemical fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds.
The project includes 6 garden beds built with eco-friendly bricks and a drip irrigation system, allowing vegetables to grow without competition from invasive weeds, while biodiversity helps prevent insects from becoming pests and supports pollinators in carrying out their role. The planting area was prepared using organic waste and the hugelkultur method. In addition, irrigation water will be reused, contributing to lower water consumption. The garden is expected to produce approximately 100 vegetables per week.
All recyclable materials collected through the exchange program will be sold, and the proceeds will be invested in other social, environmental, and educational initiatives developed by the company, such as the "De La Mano con la Escuela" program, which purchases school supplies that are donated to employees' children to support their education. In 2025, Eurofarma Guatemala recycled 56 tons of materials through various campaigns, with all proceeds allocated to the "De la Mano con la Escuela" program.
“The project was designed based on sustainability criteria to minimize environmental impact and promote the circular economy. Optimizing the planting area, engaging employees in separating recyclable materials, encouraging exchanges, and promoting healthier eating habits have been our inspiration to ensure effective employee participation. Encouraging new habits and behaviors is also our way of raising awareness and driving the change we want to see,” said Isamara Freitas, Executive Sustainability Manager at Eurofarma.
Another highlight is the vermicomposting area, a 16 m² space dedicated to processing organic waste generated by the cafeteria, as well as pruning residues, through the use of earthworms. This process transforms organic waste into high-quality organic fertilizers, producing both vermicompost leachate and worm humus, which are rich in essential nutrients that improve soil fertility and promote healthy plant growth.
Other Eurofarma Organic Gardens
Eurofarma also operates organic gardens in Brazil and Colombia. In February 2019, the company inaugurated its first garden in a 1,000 m² area at its Industrial Complex in Itapevi, São Paulo. Due to the initiative's success, the program was expanded in July of the same year to the Ribeirão Preto facility, also in São Paulo, where another 250 m² organic garden was established. Since the project began, it has delivered:
- More than 21,500 vegetables to employees;
- 500 kg of recyclable waste collected.
At the end of 2025, volunteers from Eurofarma's operation in Bogotá, Colombia, in partnership with the Bogotá Botanical Garden (JBB), prepared the area and planted the organic garden. This year, ecological bricks were installed, and medicinal plants such as anise, oregano, chamomile, lemongrass, basil, chili pepper, rue, mint, spearmint, thyme, strawberries, and parsley were cultivated.
Eurofarma is present throughout Latin America and also maintains smaller operations in the United States and Africa. The company currently employs more than 13,300 people and ranks among the three largest pharmaceutical companies in the region. Its ESG strategy is built on five key pillars aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making Eurofarma a benchmark in sustainability within the healthcare sector.
